Assassin's Creed Black Flag Co-op Multiplayer Domain_10

Ubisoft has been at the forefront of interesting multiplayer experiences. From Spies Vs. Mercs inSplinter Cell to the multiplayer offerings inAssassin's Creed, Ubisoft has created many great asymmetrical multiplayer experiences for players to enjoy.

With how radically different theAssassin's Creed series is now compared to its inception, the multiplayer has also been missing. Many forget that some of the titles even included cooperative and competitive multiplayer offerings, which is a shame considering how unique and fun they were. Regardless if you are a veteran or have never experienced it, here are 10 things you didn't know aboutAssassin's Creed's multiplayer.

10 Co-op Meant To Be In Earlier Games

Players have been asking for co-opAssassin's Creed since the series' inception. While it took quite a few games to get there, fans finally got what they wanted when co-op was introduced inAssassin's Creed: Unity.

It may have been introduced late into the series, but Ubisoft has wanted to incorporate multiplayer into their games for a long time. Going as far back as the original pitch forAssassin's Creed, Ubisoft has wanted co-op to play a role in the series. Of course, we didn't see multiplayer in the series untilBrotherhood introduced competitive multiplayer andUnity brought co-op to the series.

Ubisoft has spent much of their time iterating on the Assassin's Creed series based on fan feedback and desires. This also extends to the game's multiplayer component.

That is why Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag introduced GameLab, a game type that allows players to experiment with the core rules of the competitive multiplayer offering. This was included because fans wanted new game modes and modifiers they could fine-tune.

8 Influenced By Splinter Cell

The multiplayer component for the Assassin's Creed series was developed by Ubisoft Annecy. This subsidiary of Ubisoft specializes in making great multiplayer components for games.

Ubisoft Annecy was not only responsible for Assassin's Creed's multiplayer but also Splinter Cell's Spies Versus Mercs multiplayer offering. In Spies Versus Mercs, players would pick one of two sides to either steal information from the Mercenaries or kill the Spies. If you played Assassin's Creed multiplayer, that sounds awfully familiar to what that game's offering provides. There is obvious inspiration taken from Splinter Cell's multiplayer in Assassin's Creed's offering.

7 Unity Companion App

Assassin's Creed: Unity tried many new things for the series. It introduced co-op, released for a new generation of consoles, and it included a companion app.

This companion app allowed players to recruit mercenaries to do missions for you and it helped unlock various chests around the world. If you didn't have any friends to play with, this app tried to give solo players extra content to experience that they were missing from the co-op component. Like the rest of Unity, however, this app went horribly wrong and was detached from the game after its Christmas patch.

6 Originally a Co-op Prince of Persia

Speaking of the original pitch for Assassin's Creed, did you know that it was going to be a side entry in thePrince of Persia series?

Originally titledPrince of Persia: Assassins, it was going to be a co-op focused game where presumably the Prince and Altair would work together in a cooperative story. Of course, that isn't what we got, but it goes to show that the multiplayer in this series has deep roots that go back to the game's conception phase.

5 Cut Naval Maps

Naval combat was one of the most refreshing things added to the Assassin's Creed franchise. Introduced in Black Flag, this mechanic has sadly been missing in more recent games despite how polished and fun it is.

It seems that Ubisoft's enthusiasm for this style of gameplay was going to spread to Black Flag's competitive multiplayer offering as well. The developers have mentioned that Naval maps were going to be included originally, but technology and time sadly prevented them from doing so. Being able to hop between boats assassinating targets would have been an incredible experience, but it is something fans never got.

4 Removed Due To Refocus

After the disaster that wasAssassin's Creed: Unity and the mediocreSyndicate, Ubisoft knew that they had to overhaul the franchise to keep the series relevant.

Fans had to wait for two years beforeAssassin's Creed: Origins released. It overhauled combat, introduced Ancient Egypt as a setting instead of renaissance-era locations, and it didn't come with multiplayer. Dedicated multiplayer fans were angered by this decision, but it was made to redirect resources to the core game. With how negatively receivedUnityandSyndicate were, Ubisoft wanted to make the core foundation of the series solid before incorporating radical modes again.

3 Ubisoft Wants Multiplayer Back

The developers ofAssassin's Creed do want to reintroduce multiplayer into the series. WhileOrigins andOdyssey were massive shifts in the direction of the series, Ubisoft does want to return to multiplayer at some point.

Certain developers at Ubisoft have been interviewed about the subject and they want to bring the social elements of multiplayer back. With how radically different the last two entries have been, it is somewhat hard to imagine what the competitive multiplayer offering would be. Considering the older games focused on stealth and assassinations, it will be interesting to see how multiplayer is handled in future titles, if it returns at all.

2 Multiplayer Iterations

While footage of each multiplayer game seems the same, there are some radical differences between everyAssassin's Creed multiplayer mode.

Brotherhood was the first game to include competitive multiplayer, letting players choose gadgets to hunt targets easier and selecting a wide range of unique characters.Revelations focused more on fleshing out the narrative by making every match a training simulation that the Templars are using.Assassin's Creed 3 and4 focused on making the gameplay slower by making equipment not as essential and making aggressive kills take longer than stealth assassinations.

1 It's Still Alive

If you never got to experience Assassin's Creed's multiplayer, you still can. While the games that included it are rather old, there is still a dedicated fanbase that plays this underrated game type.

A dedicated group of fans has created a Discord server based around the multiplayer from Brotherhood, Assassin's Creed 3, and the fourth main title. If you play on PC, there is a good chance you can find a full lobby to experience this rather unique multiplayer offering.
